Overview

Built for a government vocational training and workforce development office, this platform covers the trainee lifecycle from enrollment through graduation across its technical and vocational training programs.

That means course catalog enrollment with prerequisite checks, live session tracking, automated grading, and the institutional compliance reporting that government training bodies actually get audited on — not just a nice-to-have dashboard.

Prerequisite validation isn't just a single lookup — some vocational tracks require a specific sequence of prior courses plus a minimum grade threshold, and a trainee can be mid-way through re-taking a failed prerequisite while still holding an active enrollment elsewhere. The enrollment engine has to check the whole dependency chain, not just the immediately preceding course.

The challenge

Problem: Manual prerequisite checking (an administrator cross-referencing a trainee's transcript against a program's requirements by hand) doesn't scale past a few hundred trainees, and it's exactly the kind of process that produces inconsistent enrollment decisions once multiple administrators are doing it independently across departments.

Approach: Modeled prerequisites as a directed dependency graph per program rather than a flat list, so the enrollment service can validate an entire prerequisite chain — including in-progress re-takes — in a single query instead of an administrator manually tracing a trainee's history.

Result: Enrollment validation became consistent and instant instead of a manual, error-prone review, and the same dependency model now backs the institutional audit reports that show, per trainee, exactly which prerequisite chain qualified them for a given course.
